Om is a cosmic wave that is more than just a sound. Om chanting and symbols, which have pervaded the western world since the 1960s counterculture, can be heard in temples, yoga studios, homes, and even on television and movies.

While to the layperson, Om is synonymous with meditation, and to yogic practitioners, it is simply a gateway to serenity, the true meaning of Om is deeply rooted in Hindu philosophy, and to comprehend its truly profound effects, one must first understand sound.

Though many people think of sound as simply something to hear, the mechanism that underpins it is a little more complex. Vibrations make up sound. These vibrations originate somewhere, travel through the air, and are detected by the ear before being interpreted by the brain, which assigns a value to them. The number of vibrations per second is defined as the frequency. Everything and everyone vibrates at some frequency because all matter is made up of atomic material that is constantly moving.

“If you want to discover the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency, and vibration,” said Nikola Tesla, a great inventor and scientist.

According to Hindu scripture, Om is the celestial sound of creation. It is the universe’s first vibration. All other vibrations can be manifested by this first vibration.

What are the advantages of meditating on Om?

Sound vibration has been shown to have a significant impact on a person’s physical, emotional, and mental well-being. The spiritual practice of chanting Om (AUM) allows us to align our frequency with the original universal frequency. A person can spiritualize their life by staying in touch with the spiritual energy of the Absolute, just as an iron rod becomes as hot as fire when it comes into contact with its flames.

Because the Absolute is beyond the mundane material senses’ comprehension, it is necessary to spiritualize the mind — the centre of all sensual activities — through sound vibration to begin the process of transcendental realisation.

A glorious tree of spirituality can grow from sincere Om chanting, just as a majestic tree can grow from a tiny seed.

The Visual Representation of OM

While most people recognize its symbol, even fewer understand what the curves, crescent, and dot comprise Om’s visual representation.

Om’s visual form represents a different state of reality in each of its aspects. The large lower curve represents the normal waking state (jgrat). In this state, the mind identifies with the physical body and perceives the world through the senses.

The upper curve represents a state of unconsciousness, also known as deep sleep (sushupti). This is a total oblivion state in which you are in a deep, dreamless sleep and have disconnected from both physical and mental activities.

The dot represents enlightenment (turiya). In this experience, a person becomes one with the Absolute, seeing that all of creation is composed of spirit and is linked by that commonality. This condition resides outside of the domain of the senses and can only be accessed through the connection of spiritual energy.

Maya is represented by the crescent that divides the three arcs from the dot. Maya is the delusion that links a person’s soul to the physical world. Chanting Om can assist one in crossing the three curves of material consciousness and arriving at the dot of enlightenment.

Conclusion:

Om’s essence is manifested and accessed differently by different types of people all around the world, much as an object painted in various ways by various painters.

Believers use the Judeo-Christian term “Amen,” and its Islamic variant “Amin,” to evoke Divine energy at the end of a prayer, just as yogis complete their meditations by repeating Om.

Even within Hinduism, the meaning and ramifications of Om are not universally accepted. The sacred syllable was initially and more appropriately spelt “aum,” but it is frequently transcribed as “om” because of how it sounds when repeated.
